Self-Editing with Catherine Ryan Hyde

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Catherine Ryan Hyde’s

Weekend Intensive on Self-Editing

In today’s tough market, self-editing has never been more important.

April 24th & 25th, 2010

Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Sunday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

(one hour break for lunch both days)

in Cambria

Bring the first 30 pages of a work in progress, and we’ll roll up our sleeves.

We’ll begin with the broader aspects of editing. Does it begin cleanly, and in the right place? Does every scene characterize and contribute to the overall momentum? Does it bog down in backstory? Then we’ll move on to other important considerations such as dialogue and its attributions. We’ll develop an eye for trimming unnecessary passages, and for honing sentences until every word carries the appropriate weight. Finally we’ll work on copyediting grammar and punctuation, and then tackle the always difficult (especially for our own work) art of proofreading.

$175

(I understand that money is tight for everyone—myself included—but consider this: for 14 hours of instruction, this fee breaks down to $12.50 an hour. I believe this workshop is cost-effective, because it replaces the need to hire an editor for your work. That said, if you literally can’t afford the fee, and money is the only thing stopping you from attending, please contact me.)

Pay at the end of the weekend, and if at any time you feel you’re not getting your money’s worth, feel free to walk away and owe nothing.

For more information, please contact me by email at:

ryanhyde@cryanhyde.com

Also, if you’re interested but can’t make the date, please let me know, as I may hold

another weekend intensive on the same subject in May.

SLO Homeless Shelter’s Wants and Needs

Monday, April 12th, 2010

I received the following email from, Sharyl Heber, last week:

I happened to go to the SLO homeless shelter yesterday with my angel friend Marianne McKeon who delivered to them, 10 dozen colored easter eggs that she and her daughter made.   They were very nice there and appreciative.  I asked what they needed on a routine basis and the woman told me ground coffee (though they do have a grinder) and blankets.  I thought I’d pass that along…

And, I think I will also pass it along.  If you want to donate, please bring a blanket and/or coffee to our meeting tomorrow night.  Someone will take the donations to the shelter.

Thank you Sharyl!

Take me back… April

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

Well, I’m almost out of oranges so I won’t be bringing any of those.  I just put my vegetable garden in last week-end so I don’t have any fresh veggies.

What to bring?  I have four egg cartons that I can give to someone who has eggs.

What can you bring to this Tuesday’s April Meeting? If you have anything homemade or homegrown, feel free to bring it.

Happy gardening and sharing when you aren’t writing!

Special thanks to R.B. Hinkle, Chemical Engineer, for his word suggestions, most of which I’m still trying to figure out what they mean.
