ABOUT US

WHO WE ARE (NIGHTWRITERS)

We call ourselves NightWriters because we usually tend to keep our day jobs, even though we may have lofty ambitions. For 14 years, NightWriters has flourished in San Luis Obispo County, California, seriously devoted to the encouragement and improvement of dedicated writers of many genres. Our membership varies between 110 and 150.  All members and the public are invited to attend monthly meetings where featured speakers, experts in their writing-related fields, give informative talks. The atmosphere is informal and cordial. Our monthly meetings are held every second Tuesday evening at 7 at the:

Johnson Avenue Church of Christ Meeting Hall

3172 Johnson Avenue

San Luis Obispo

The real essence of NightWriters blooms in our many workshops (critique groups). The number of groups varies from time to time as new ones are added or faltering ones fold, but there are usually at least ten. (See info on Groups.) In these smaller groups, usually 8 or so writers each, helpful critiques are given after each reading. We meet at the leader’s home, usually twice a month either in the morning or evening, to read from our recent works in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, fantasy, or children’s literature.  Several of the groups have been vibrant for 14 years. Some are newer and experimental.

Many of the writers in groups have developed trust and friendship with their groupmates, making it difficult for newcomers to “find a home.” But if you’re interested in discovering a group that fits you and your work, try phoning the leader of a group that seems promising, sit in on a session to catch the flavor, then if you like it, ask to come again and read a short piece of yours if there’s time. You may discover that even though the group is full, they’ll make room for you if you seem to be a solid addition.  If you don’t click with one group, try others. And if you just can’t squeeze in anywhere, consider creating a new group of your own. Contact Anne Peterson
annepeterson@charter.net for guidance and mentoring.

Most of our writing is of very high quality. Many of our writers publish regularly or occasionally. Our writers are serious and dedicated about their work, whether their goal is publishing or just having the satisfaction that they’re writing the best they can..

All the groups welcome visitors, but please call ahead.
